Website Hosting and Care Plan Costs in Rands: What to Expect

A practical guide to monthly website costs in South Africa: shared and managed hosting, care plan tiers, and how to avoid paying for more than you need.

The build price is only the first bill a website sends you. After launch come hosting, domain renewals, backups, updates and support. Many owners are surprised by these recurring costs, mostly because quotes bury them. This guide lays them out in rands so you can budget properly.

For the once-off side of the story, see what a business website costs in South Africa. For what maintenance actually involves, read website maintenance plans explained.

The recurring costs of a website

Every site has some or all of these running costs:

  1. Hosting. The server that keeps your site online.
  2. Domain name. Renewed annually through a registrar.
  3. Business email. Often a separate subscription.
  4. Care plan. Updates, backups, monitoring and support.
  5. Extras. Premium plugins, stock photos, paid tools.

Our guide on domains, hosting and business email explained covers how these pieces fit together.

Hosting: what the market charges

Based on South African hosting providers and comparison guides we reviewed, rough ranges per month are:

Type Typical range Best for
Shared hosting R30 – R250 Small, low-traffic sites
Mid-tier or business shared R150 – R360 Growing sites that need more speed
Managed hosting R1,000 – R5,000 Sites where the provider handles updates, backups and security

Treat these as a guide only. Prices change, and introductory offers often rise sharply at renewal, so check the renewal price before you sign up. Cheap shared hosting is fine for a simple brochure site, but a slow server undermines a good design. See website speed and Core Web Vitals.

Care plans: what the market charges

A care plan covers the human work of keeping a site healthy. One South African comparison guide gives these indicative tiers per month:

Tier Typical range Typical site
Basic R199 – R500 Simple static sites
Business R1,500 – R3,500 Company sites that generate enquiries
Premium / ecommerce R3,800 – R8,000+ Busy stores and custom platforms

The spread is wide because the work is different. A static brochure site needs little. An online store processing orders needs monitoring, tested backups and fast fixes, because every hour of downtime costs sales.

What our plan costs

Our hosting, domain and care plan for websites starts from R350 per month. It covers keeping your site online, updated, backed up and monitored. The exact figure depends on your site, so we confirm it in your quote rather than surprising you later. Systems we build, which need heavier hosting and support, start from R950 per month. We explain that in how much a custom business system costs.

What a good care plan includes

Do not compare plans by price alone. Compare what is in them:

  • Software updates for the platform, theme and plugins, tested before they go live.
  • Automatic off-site backups, with restore tests.
  • Uptime and security monitoring.
  • SSL certificate and domain renewal management.
  • A support contact with a stated response time.
  • A number of small content changes per month.
  • A short report of what was done.

If a plan lists "support" without saying what that means, ask. Vague promises are the number one red flag, as covered in our maintenance guide.

Ways to waste money

Paying for a premium plan on a simple site. A five-page brochure site rarely needs managed hosting at R2,000 a month.

Paying for nothing. A site with no updates and no backups is cheap until it is hacked. Cleaning up costs far more than a year of care. See what to do if your website is hacked.

Not owning your accounts. If the provider holds the only login to your hosting and domain, you cannot leave without a fight. Your domain and hosting accounts should be in your name.

Paying twice for the same thing. Some agencies charge separate fees for hosting, backups and security that a single plan should cover.

Long lock-ins. A long contract with exit fees means you keep paying even when service drops.

How to cut costs sensibly

  • Choose a plan that matches your site. Simple site, simple plan.
  • Remove plugins you do not use. They add risk and slow the site.
  • Pay annually if it saves money, but only with a provider you trust.
  • Bundle email, hosting and domain to avoid duplicate charges.
  • Do the small edits yourself. A CMS you can use means fewer paid change requests. Our Business Site plan includes training for this reason.

For email, compare options in Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace for small business.

A worked example

Take a service business with a ten-page Business Site:

  • Build: from R18,000 once-off.
  • Hosting and care plan: from R350 per month, so about R4,200 per year.
  • Domain renewal: a small annual amount through the registrar.
  • Business email: per user, per month, depending on provider.

Year one is the build plus the annual running cost. From year two, you pay only the running cost, unless you commission new work. That predictable shape is exactly what you should expect from any provider.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. What is the monthly or annual price, and what does it include?
  2. What does it cost to renew in year two?
  3. Who owns the hosting and domain accounts?
  4. How often are backups made, and where are they stored?
  5. What happens if the site goes down at night or on a weekend?
  6. How many changes are included each month?
  7. How do I cancel, and what notice is required?

The bottom line

Budget for a website the way you budget for a vehicle: the purchase price and the running costs. A modest monthly plan keeps a site secure, fast and working. If you want a clear number for your own site, check our pricing section or ask for a quote, and we will tell you exactly what the monthly figure covers.
