Online Store Shipping in South Africa: Couriers and Rates

How to set up shipping for a South African online store, from choosing couriers and pickup points to rate models, packaging, tracking and returns.

Shipping decides whether customers come back. A great product that arrives late, damaged or with a surprise delivery fee leads to refunds and bad reviews. This guide covers how to set up shipping sensibly for a South African online store.

Courier services, prices and coverage change, so confirm current terms with each provider.

Understand the shipping landscape

South African merchants typically choose among:

  • Door-to-door couriers that collect from you and deliver to the customer's address.
  • Pickup-point networks, where customers collect from a nearby retail point or locker. Examples include Pargo and PAXI, which can lower cost and make delivery more convenient for people who are not home during the day.
  • Shipping aggregators, such as Bob Go, that let you compare rates and book several couriers through one account, often with plugins for popular store platforms.
  • Your own deliveries, practical for a local area where you can serve customers yourself.
  • Postal and freight options, for particular parcel sizes or bulk goods.

Many stores combine two or three methods: a door-to-door option, a cheaper pickup-point option and local delivery or collection.

Know your parcel

Couriers price on weight and size, using the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Weigh and measure every product once with its packaging, and record it in your store. Accurate data means accurate quotes at checkout, and no unpleasant surprises when the courier re-weighs a parcel.

Choose a shipping rate model

There are several approaches, and each affects conversion and margin:

Model How it works Good for
Live courier rates Checkout shows the real cost calculated from weight and destination Varied product weights and destinations
Flat rate One price regardless of order Simplicity, similar-size parcels
Free shipping over a threshold Free above a set order value Raising average order value
Free shipping on everything Cost built into prices Higher-margin products
Local delivery or collection Fixed price or free within an area Businesses with a physical location

Free-shipping thresholds work well. Set the threshold slightly above your average order value so customers add an item to qualify, and check the numbers still work after courier costs.

Be upfront about cost and time

Unexpected costs at the last step are one of the main reasons shoppers abandon a cart. Show shipping information early:

  • A shipping and delivery page, linked from the footer and product pages.
  • Estimated delivery times for major centres and for outlying areas.
  • Costs visible before the customer enters card details.

Under-promise on delivery times and over-deliver. If a courier says two to three days, quote three to five.

Packaging

  • Use packaging suited to the product, strong enough to survive handling.
  • Avoid oversized boxes, which cost more to ship and look wasteful.
  • Include a packing slip, and consider adding a small branded touch.
  • Photograph valuable items before they leave, which helps if there is a damage claim.

Tracking and communication

Customers want to know where their order is. Send:

  1. An order confirmation straight away.
  2. A dispatch notice with the tracking link.
  3. A delivery confirmation.

Most platforms and aggregators can automate these emails. Fewer "where is my order?" messages means less time on support.

Returns

Be clear about how returns work, since this also affects trust and conversion.

  • State the return window and the conditions.
  • Explain who pays for return shipping.
  • Make the process simple, such as an online return request form.
  • Process refunds promptly once the item is received.

South African consumer law gives buyers certain rights, including for defective goods and for distance sales, so have your policy checked against the rules that apply to what you sell. See also POPIA and your business website for how to handle customer address data.

Integrate shipping with your store

Manual booking works at ten orders a week, but it becomes a bottleneck at a hundred. Look for:

If you are building a custom store, ask your developer about courier API integrations early in the project, because they shape your checkout design.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Guessing weights and dimensions.
  • Using one courier for every parcel, regardless of cost.
  • Hiding shipping costs until the last page.
  • Promising delivery times you cannot keep.
  • Having no process for lost or damaged parcels.
  • Forgetting rural customers, who may need a different method or longer lead time.
